In 2017–18, almost all households in New South Wales (98% or 2.9 million) had at least one security measure installed.

TYPE OF HOME SECURITY MEASURE(S) BY DWELLING TYPE (Table 30)

Home security measures commonly installed in:

• houses or semi-detached houses in New South Wales were a door with a deadlock (73%), a door with a security screen (72%) and a window with a keyed lock (66%)
• flats or apartments in New South Wales were a door with a deadlock (69%), a window with a keyed lock (64%) and secure entry to the complex (62%).

TYPE OF HOME SECURITY MEASURE(S) INSTALLED IN NEW SOUTH WALES COMPARED TO THE NATIONAL AVERAGE (Table 30)

The prevalence and type of security measures installed in New South Wales were generally consistent with the national findings, however some differences exist.

When compared to the national population, households in New South Wales were more likely to have:

• a door with a deadlock (72% compared with 69%)
• a window with a keyed lock (65% compared with 57%).

When compared to the national population, households in New South Wales were less likely to have:

• a door with a security screen (66% compared with 69%)
• a window with a security screen or shutter (25% compared with 31%).

LEVEL OF HOME SECURITY (Table 31)

Approximately half of households in New South Wales (51% or 1.5 million) were classified as having enhanced security. This was higher than the national average (44%).^Endnote1

WHETHER ANY SECURITY MEASURES WERE INSTALLED OR UPGRADED IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS (Table 32)

In the 12 months prior to interview in New South Wales, approximately:

• 13% of households (389,800) installed or upgraded at least one security measure
• 3.8% of households (111,700) installed or upgraded at least one security measure due to a perceived increase in crime or public nuisance in their area, which was lower than the national rate (5%)^Endnote2
• 9.6% of households (281,300) wanted to improve their home security but were unable to do so, which was lower than the national rate (11%).

AWARENESS OF SECURITY WHEN AT HOME (Table 35)

Approximately one in four persons in New South Wales (24% or 1.5 million) reported being more aware of their security when at home, compared to 12 months earlier. This was lower than the national average (30%).^Endnote3
